The SBHS Math Department presents a wide variety of courses at both college preparatory and honors/AP levels. We are proud to say our students have become teachers, engineers, program developers and researchers (just to name a few). Our department goal is for all students to see success in math, no matter the level! 

If you have questions about math classes, please ask your current teacher. We would love to help you plan out your high school classes or look at how you can use math in future careers. 

Conceptual Math (2 Semesters)

Corequisite(s): Must be enrolled in CP Algebra 1, CP Geometry, or CP Algebra 2
While this course is not currently UC-approved, students take it concurrently with a UC-approved math course. It is instrumental in student support in Algebra 1 and beyond. 

Conceptual Math focuses on strengthening previously learned math concepts. It is designed as a support class, taken concurrently with another math course. This class takes a targeted approach to instruction to help bridge between middle and high school math. Activities are focused on developing foundational techniques and skills with:
  • Fractions/Decimals/Percentages
  • Integer operations
  • Problem solving 
 

Computer Technology (1 Semester)

Prerequisites : none

Computer Tech is a one semester elective course that covers two main topics: typing and coding. This course builds foundational skills in typing efficiently, which is essential for success in our digital world. Students develop proper technique with a keyboard. Goals include reading a prompt and typing it without looking down at the keyboard and increasing their words per minute typing speed throughout the semester. 


The coding portion is designed to be an introductory course for students with no background in coding. Students create sequences of code to complete mazes, draw images, and solve puzzles. Coding assignments are self-paced and provide individualized feedback to help students debug their code step by step. The semester ends with a timed typing test with a specific words per minute typing speed goal and a final coding project that is an accumulation of the skills developed through the semester.

Algebra 1 CP (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of HSPT and middle school math. 

Algebra 1 CP develops a foundation of mathematical vocabulary with the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and the properties of equality. This course builds the following skills regarding linear equations, functions, and inequalities:

  • Analyzing/Interpreting
  • Solving
  • Graphing
  • Solving Systems of Equations/Inequalities

Algebra 1 CP also introduces properties of exponents and quadratic equations.

Students completing this course will be eligible for Geometry CP (recommended) or Geometry Honors (A’s both semester and teacher approval required)

Algebra 1 Honors (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of HSPT and middle school math, with teacher recommendation. 

Algebra 1 Honors develops fluent mathematical vocabulary with the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and the properties of equality. This course builds a deep understanding of the following skills regarding linear equations, functions, and inequalities:

  • Analyzing/Interpreting
  • Solving
  • Graphing
  • Solving Systems of Equations/Inequalities

Algebra 1 Honors also explores the properties of nonlinear equations regarding exponential and quadratic functions.
Students completing this course will be eligible for Geometry Honors (A’s/B’s both semesters and teacher approval) or Geometry CP

Geometry CP (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Algebra 1 CP or Algebra 1 Honors
Geometry CP builds an understanding of Geometric concepts through a wide knowledge of theorems, postulates, and definitions. This course extends the analysis of Geometric relationships in the following categories:

  • Reasoning and Proofs
  • Parallel Lines and a Transversal
  • Characteristics, Similarity, and CongruenceTriangles 
  • Quadrilaterals
  • Circles
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Right Triangle Trigonometry

CP Geometry also explores transformations of 2D figures in a coordinate plane.
Students completing this course will be eligible for Algebra 2 CP (recommended)

Geometry Honors (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Algebra 1 CP or Algebra 1 Honors (A’s/B’s both semesters and teacher approval required)
Geometry Honors builds an understanding of Geometric concepts through a wide knowledge of theorems, postulates, and definitions. This course extends the analysis of Geometric relationships in the following categories:
  • Reasoning, Proofs and Logic
  • Parallel Lines and a Transversal
  • Characteristics, Similarity, and CongruenceTriangles 
  • Quadrilaterals
  • Circles
  • Transformations in a coordinate plane
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Right Triangle Trigonometry
Geometry Honors also explores right triangle trigonometry and special right triangles in preparation for Algebra 2/Trig.
Students completing this course will be eligible for Algebra 2/Trig Honors (recommended; A's and B's both semesters and teacher approval required) or Algebra 2 CP
 

Algebra 2 CP (2 Semesters)

Successful completion of Algebra 1 and Geometry

Students completing this course will build on their Algebra 1, knowledge of linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. Algebra 2 CP extends the analysis of graphs, function notation, tables, and equation solving for the following families of functions:

• Polynomials
• Radicals / Rational
• Exponential and Logarithmic
• Rational

In addition, students will be introduced to sequence and series, Conic sections, and Probability and statistics. 

Students completing this course are eligible for Precalculus, Statistics, and Financial Algebra.

Algebra 2/Trig Honors (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Geometry Honors with an A both semesters and approval from the math department. Placement test required. A Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus CE) is required for this course (CAS equipped calculators nor Casio devices are permitted).

This course is designed to cover all topics of CP Algebra 2 in one semester and one semester of Trigonometry. This course covers the following topics:

  • All functions discussed in Algebra 2 CP
    • Solving, graphing, end behavior, translating, domain and range
  • Matrices
  • Conic Sections
  • Trigonometric functions and their graphs
  • Trigonometric identities

Students completing this course will be eligible for a variety of courses. Students with A’s both semesters and teacher approval will be eligible for AP Calculus. Students with B's both semesters and teacher approval are also eligible for Precalculus, Statistics, and Financial Algebra.

Note: this course is UC approved for an addtional honors point

Precalculus CP (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Algebra 2 CP or Algebra 2/Trig Honors. A Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus CE) is required for this course (CAS equipped calculators nor Casio devices are permitted).

Precalculus builds an understanding of algebraic and trigonometric concepts. This course covers the following topics:

  • Domain, range, and points of discontinuity
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Vectors
  • Conic sections 
  • Polar coordinates and graphs
  • Trigonometric functions and their graphs
  • Trigonometric identities

Students completing this course will be eligible for Calculus CP (B’s both semesters and teacher approval) or AP Calculus (A’s both semesters and teacher approval required). This course is not required to take Statistics or Financial Algebra.

Financial Algebra (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Algebra 2

Financial Algebra applies advanced algebra skills in real-world context to help students make informed decisions regarding personal and professional finance. This course covers the following topics:

  • Banking
  • Credit
  • Automobile Ownership
  • Employment
  • Taxes
  • Independent Living
  • Stock Market
  • Business Models
  • Budgeting
  • Retirement Plans
Students completing this course will be equipped to utilize financial mathematics in their daily lives.

Statistics CP (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Seniors or Juniors who have successfully completed Algebra 2 

This elective course is an introduction to statistics and will include descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and experimental design. 

Topics will include: 

  • Sampling
  • Descriptive statistics (Graphical displays, mean, median,mode)
  • Probability
  • Distributions
  • Confidence intervals
  • Regression analysis

Students will learn how to use technologies including spreadsheets to complete analysis and then learn to interpret and apply them to solve applications.  

Students completing this course will be equipped to utilize data analysis in their daily lives.

Calculus CP (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Seniors who have successfully completed Precalculus or Algebra 2/Trig Honors with recommendation. A Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus CE) is required for this course (CAS equipped calculators nor Casio devices are permitted).

A strong foundation in both algebra and arithmetic prepares students to apply their knowledge of algebra and geometry in this course. Students learn the fundamentals of calculus (limits, derivatives and integrals) algebraically, graphically and numerically. This course covers the following broad topics:

  • Limits
  • Derivatives (Computations and Applications)
  • Integrals (Computations and Applications)
  • Intro to Differential Equations
  • Applications of Calculus

Students completing this course will be equipped to enroll in college-level calculus courses.

AP Calculus (2 Semesters)

Prerequisite(s): Completion of Algebra 2/Trig Honors with A’s both semesters or Precalculus with A’s both semesters and teacher approval. Placement test and summer assignment required. A Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus CE) is required for this course (CAS equipped calculators nor Casio devices are permitted).

A strong foundation in both algebra and arithmetic prepares students to apply their knowledge of algebra and geometry in this course. Students learn the fundamentals of calculus (limits, derivatives and integrals) algebraically, graphically and numerically. This course is equivalent to a one-semester Calculus 1 course at the college level and is taught as such. It covers the following broad topics:

  • Limits
  • Derivatives (Computations and Applications)
  • Integrals (Computations and Applications)
  • Intro to Differential Equations
  • Applications of Calculus

Students enrolled in AP Calculus are required to prepare for and take the AP Calculus AB examination in May of each school year. 

Students completing this course may be eligible to enroll in Calculus 2 at the college level, pending current specific college policies.
